Dr. StrangeBurrito, or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Loop

As many of you know, I hate road running. For me, a single mile stretches into eternity and, while power-hiking is a staple in the woods, walking up a hill feels wrong on the roads. (I still do it; I just feel guilty about it.) So how did I find myself running countless loops around a single quarter mile block in West Reading for half of January?

This year Burrito League* came to West Reading, thanks to the great folks at Fleet Feet (plus Comalli Taqueria and MountToCoast for donating prizes), and I ended up loving it more than I ever thought possible. The first day of the “challenge” I ran about 6 miles with fellow Pacer Brandon Beane, and as we finished our last loop, I joked that even running 10 feet into the next loop we were halfway done and might as well finish another. It’s wild how prophetic those words came to be.

One of the things I love most about running is the meditative state one can achieve. On a good day, miles blend seamlessly into the next; on a great day, miles blend seamlessly into the next, you feel good the entire time, your soundtrack doesn’t have a misstep, and you get to see some beautiful scenery along the way. I have a very hard time getting out of my own head when I’m pounding the pavement, but remarkably, doing 600 Burrito Loops was not the repetitive drag I anticipated; rather, it became a thoughtless, relaxing trance. (Sorry, I’m going to humble brag right now… or maybe not so humble…but if you didn’t do the math, I want to point out 600 loops is ~150 miles around the same quarter mile block, over the course of two weeks.) 😉

When I wasn’t zen-fully zoned out, there were so many community members cheering me on. I cannot emphasize enough how fantastic the staff at Fleet Feet is; they were/are so encouraging and welcoming. (It’s also never a bad thing to have an aid station every quarter mile.) I made friends in the most unexpected places, whether it be employees at the funeral home, bars on the block, residents in the alley, or the Sisco man making his weekly restaurant delivery. I was surprised by how many people were watching me run endless loops around this single block, and while they didn’t necessarily understand the compulsion to run during some of the coldest weather we faced this year, they were supportive, nonetheless.

Saying it’s been hard to get out on the trails this winter would be a huge understatement. Burrito League gave me something to look forward to during some of the roughest times. I ran plenty of loops with long-time running friends, but also met and ran with awesome people I probably wouldn’t have otherwise. (Shout out to Brandon & Curtis, who each did a crazy number of loops, and Alex, who took the unofficial win with 700 loops.)

I know Thomas, Jason, and the whole Fleet Feet crew have some big plans in mind for next year, so if you get a chance and feel like getting a little loopy, keep Burrito League on your calendar. Even if you don’t go all in, just a few loops with like-minded people can be a wonderful reminder of why we run in the first place. I highly recommend it.

Fleet Feet’s “Teddy Bear Trot” less than a week away!

Join Fleet Feet West Reading for the 8th annual Teddy Bear Trot!

The Teddy Bear Trot is the perfect blend of running and giving back to our community. All participants are asked to bring a brand NEW Teddy Bear to the event.

New this year: At Eight-Twenty at the Mills, we will have a teddy bear tag-making station for you to write something special to the kids who will receive your bear. We will also have a photo shoot area to take some pictures with your donations.

Participants then join us as we run the bears to the Opportunity House in Reading, for them to use in their Learning Center. This year we will be welcomed into the Opportunity House Early Learning Center to say “Hello” to some of the kids who attend the Center. The kids who come to welcome us will not only be benefitting from our donations, but will get to take a bear home after the event. After making our donations, we will continue en route to finish our 3-mile fun run. This is not a race, but rather a social group run to give back to our community. Once back at Eight-Twenty at the Mills, we will have a Deluxe Hot Cocoa station for you to get warmed up after your run.

The proceeds for this event will be donated to Opportunity House as they continue to serve our homeless community. Additional monetary donations will be accepted at the event and will be given to Opportunity House to support their endeavors. We will also be collecting non-perishable foods and blankets at the start of the run at Sly Fox to donate as well.

Everyone will have a chance to wear/test Karhu shoes, an exclusive Fleet Feet product. Karhu is Finnish for the word “Bear,” making their brand a perfect partner for this event!

Runners will be sent to Opportunity House to make our donations in 3 groups.  Groups will depart at 10:00, 10:10 and 10:15 to donate the teddy bears. Please take a look at the pace ranges for each group and sign up for the time that best suits your abilities. Our goal is to get to the Opportunity House at the same time to give them the bears and for a group photo. We will then continue on our 4-mile loop. There will be group leaders to help direct the runners/walkers.

10:00am – Walkers and 13+ minute milers

10:10am – 10-12 minute milers

10:15am – 8-10 minute milers

Fleet Feet’s “Run Santa Run Scavenger Hunt” on 12/7/25

‘Tis the season to be Merry!

Join Fleet Feet West Reading for a Christmas adventure run through West Reading and Wyomissing! The Run Santa Run Scavenger Hunt, organized by Fleet Feet West Reading, is back for its 4th year. You will be given a list of riddles and questions to find the locations to run to and earn your raffle tickets. Because answering riddles and running is better with friends and family, start gathering your group of merry runners. There are no official teams, and this can be done as an individual as well. You may also partner up with someone at the start of the festivities. Be prepared to sing, dance, decorate a tree, take a selfie, and eat some cookies as part of the challenge!

You will earn tickets for raffle prizes on the hunt. In addition to the raffle prizes, we will have fun prizes for the best Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus costumes. Participants will receive a custom Fleet Feet West Reading holiday-themed ear warmer headband.

We will be donating a portion of the proceeds to the food pantry at Bethany Lutheran Church. Please consider donating non-perishable food items that can be dropped off at the beginning of our adventure!

The riddles for the locations will be handed out starting at 9:30 a.m. Participants will be sent out at 10:00 a.m. and will have exactly 1 hour to get to as many locations as they can to earn their raffle tickets. Anyone who returns to Sly Fox after 11:00 a.m. will have to hand their raffle tickets over to the Grinch. You may only return with the raffle tickets you earned, not your entire group’s tickets.

Hoka will be joining us this year with their Clifton 10 and Arahi 8 to demo during your run and some free give-a-ways and raffles.

The event venue is at Eight-Twenty at the Mills, located behind Sly Fox and next to Kimberton Whole Foods.
