The days are getting shorter–enjoy these last few unburdened WNRs before we have to start breaking out the head lamps!
On the weeks that fellow club members host, please bring your favorite food, beverage, or dessert. If you can, bring an extra lawn chair so that we’ll all be able to kick back and relax!
Here are the locations and hosts for September:
–September 1: We will run from Jon and Cathy Durand’s house (2419 Laurel Rd, Reading)–one block from Wilson HS. This will be a road run, and the post-run gathering will follow at the same location.
–September 22: We will run from Beth and Tom’s residence (3 Marlin Ave, Wernersville). This will be a road run, with the post-run gathering to follow at the same location
ALL RUNS START AT 6:15pm.
Not racing Blues Cruise this year? You can still be part of the fun as a VOLUNTEER!
Volunteers are needed at individual Aid Stations as well as at the Start/Finish and on the course.

Of course, volunteers for race day are desperately needed as well. They can contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org. I will assign them or you can request a spot you feel most comfortable with.
Volunteers are needed for the following: Parking, Photography, Start/Finish, Setup, Registration, Re-Sale Stand (Trying to sell old Blues Cruise stock), Help with awards/timing, Help with food/setup, Clean-up help, Transportation (Drop Bags), Sweeping (Will be from Aid Station to Aid Station).
We will also need people for Course Marking on Saturday, October 2nd at 3PM at the Lakeview Pavilion. People who are interested can contact Michael L. Yoder directly at 610-207-4247 via text or phone call.
We will have shirts from RUSeen this year that have some reflective aspects to them, as well as winter gloves that are reflective.
Everyone who enters the 2021 Blues Cruise race will receive a customized reusable cup from UltrASpire in their swag bag! The 7oz. UltrAspire Cup greatly reduces the amount of waste generation and environmental impact of a paper cup. It also reduces the number of touchpoints to reduce the risk of transmitting COVID or any other nasty viruses. It’s our way of reducing waste and protecting you and our environment. No grabbing cups this year. Just ask Aid Station volunteers to pour.
Other COVID-related precautions:
- Aid Stations will have “normal” Ultra running selection of aid but runners will have to ask volunteers for their aid requirements when arriving at an aid station. Volunteers will then provide aid on a small bowl or plate. No more grabbing with your hands in to bowls or use of community spoons
- Volunteers at Registration, Aid Stations, and Post Race Food will be asked to mask-up.
Welcome back to the race world KRIS KRINGLE! This year’s 5-mile race will be held at the Berks County Agricultural Center on Sunday December 26 at 10:00 AM and we can’t wait to see you there.
The race travels in a clockwise direction this year, as we reverse directions every year giving runners a different perspective of the beautiful course. It is stroller- and walker-friendly. There are fast road sections, slow hill sections, gorgeous trail in the Blue Marsh Lake area, and a section of the Union Canal trail next to a beautiful trout stream. Unfortunately dogs are not allowed on the Union Canal trail, so pets have to wait with your friends at the finish.

General Meeting Minutes

Treasury Report – Shaun Luther—120% of target. A little less in the bank than last month due to Blues Cruise and Run for the Ages expenses, annual rent for the trailer at Storage World, and the donations to Berks Country cross country coaches from Kris Kringle, the Friends of Nolde, and the Special Olympics.
- Charlie Horse Half Marathon, completed in May—Shaun Luther— At the meeting, the club had the presentation of the ‘big check’ for $1600 to the Special Olympics representatives.
- Run for the Ages 10K Trail Run, completed in June—no report
- Grings Mill 5K and 10K, just completed—Jane Setley—237 registered and 41 day-of registrations. Total income was over $8700; a little less than half that will come back to the club. There is still an order of t-shirts to pay for. There was an issue of the ambulance not showing up (which also happened at Run for the Ages). Roger Stafford supplied the medals, and he was a good choice to replace Terry’s Trophies (now closed). RockHound Apparel (Robesonia) did the t-shirts. Next year’s date is Sunday, August 7, 2022. Jason Karpinski will be the new race director.
- Blues Cruise 50K, Sunday, October 3, 2021—Dan Govern—He has about $3000 of previous donations, Dan and Stephan Weiss, who will add money from his races, are talking to Nathan Freewall—they will organize some trail upgrades. Nathan will provide a supplier and organize a trail maintenance day. Dan is starting to spend money—medals and hats purchased. Waiting on shirts. Registrations, which we going very well, have slowed down – currently at 281 registrants, and the cap is 450. It was noted that many peoplewait to register until September. But the COVID variant could also be a deterrent to early registration. Asked for advice about how to approach this—Mike Whalen recommends that the club states, “We will follow CDC guidance and pursuant to local guidelines.” It was also recommended that the club publish a statement that “volunteers must be vaccinated or wear a mask.” Mike Gallen recommends a ‘bring your own water container’ to reduce the handling of the cups and transmission of the virus. As always, this race will require a ton of volunteers, which Dan is organizing a needs-statement.
- Oley Valley Apple Country Classic, 10-mile and 5K run, Saturday, October 9, 2021—Barry Goodhart—the races will be run in conjunction with the Apple Fest. The application is available on Facebook. They will need volunteers. Registration (and the bathrooms) will be indoors. Runners will receive a $5 coupon for food at the Apple Fest. The directors are still organizing the shirts.
- Kris Kringle 5 Miler, Sunday, December 26, 2021—Lisa Domeshek—The directors are working on the hoodies, and one person is registered so far.
- Shiver by the River 5K and 10K, dates to be officially announced—Tiffany Pantoja—The directors are moving along with planning. They have the Temple fire company post event reserved, and they are looking for a new caterer due to retirement of previous one.
- Jr. High Cross Country Fall Invitational – no report
Social Committee: Wine and Cheese Social—Karin Long—will happen in September, official date to be announced.
- Trip to the Veladrome: Mike Whalen will work on this for next year’s bike racing season
Communications Committee—no report
Community Service: Wednesday night runs—last night was bad weather, but still had a few runners.
Membership committee: no update
- “The grill that won’t go away”—Steve McGuire is using it on 8/25 for WNR at his house, then whoever wants it can have it.
- Race Mates – Mike Whalen—Christmas in July race was successful. Grings Mill race was successful, with many Pacers participating. Mike will talk to some of the athletes, and, if feasible, may give them the option to finish the final distance on their own. Running Man “5K” slow push on Saturday.
- Steve states that the club will keep the meetings at Tino’s for the present.
- Mike Whalen suggested contracting with one ambulance agency (such as Schuylkill Valley) to get a more consistent show rate of the ambulances at our races, rather than going to local companies in the race-event area.
- Reading Hospital Road Run: half marathon, 5-mile, and 1-mile events, will be on Oct 17, 2021, with same course as in 2019 (around the Reading Hospital area). Pacing groups by Fleet Feet will return. Pacers have volunteered in the past, and the request will be the same this year.

We are hoping to return to the pre-Covid Shiver; however, as conditions are changing, we will be following all recommendations from our state & local health agencies, the RRCA, as well as the CDC. Masks or other requirements will be communicated, if necessary, via email and the Pagoda Pacers Discussion Group Facebook page. We are keeping our options open regarding the post-race snacks, water stops, registration, etc. More details to follow as we get closer to our December race.
The Shiver will be a series!! Pre-registration is only available for the series and we plan to have race day registration for both the series and individual races. We received a lot of positive feedback regarding last year’s shirt, so we will offer a similar shirt this year. Once we have finalized the design and color, a sample will be posted on the Pagoda Pacers Discussion Group Facebook page.
Apps will be mailed with a Pretzel City mailing and can be found online, at either our web site or Pretzel City Sports website. As in the past, we are offering online registration, for the series, at www.pretzelcitysports.com.
