‘Twas Time for Kris Kringle

by Polly Corvaia

‘Twas time for the Kris Kringle,
And so it begun.
An in-person race--
Let's see who will run.

Applications were mailed
And planning took place.
We kept moving forward
And hoped we could race.

Registrations came in,
But the numbers were low.
Seemed everyone was waiting
To be sure the race would go.

Back to a 5-Miler,
The regular course was planned.
But the next pandemic might stop us,
And the race would be canned.

But good luck was with us,
And all came together.
500 runners showed up,
And so did good weather.

Kringle’s comeback was successful!
Our volunteers are THE BEST!
Some details yet to complete,
Next month we’ll share the rest.

35th Kris Kringle 5-Mile Race Set for December 26!

The 35th running of the KRIS KRINGLE 5 MILE RACE is Sunday December 26th at the Berks County Agricultural Center, 1238 County Welfare Road, Leesport, PA 19533. Registration opens at 8:30, race starts at 10:00. This is an important year for club events to get real racing back after a virtual year.

Race-day registration will be available and we need as many volunteers as possible to get the race off smoothly. If you are racing, consider helping at the registration table. We also need help parking cars, manning road intersections, directing runners at the finish line, presenting awards, and cleaning up afterwards. Volunteers should arrive at the Ag Center between 7:30 – 8:00. Sign the volunteer list at the registration table and let Polly know you are there to help. Masks are required inside the 4H building as per Penn State Extension.

Proceeds benefit high school runners through the Berks County Cross Country Coaches Association and provide college scholarships, free running shoes to students in need, and sponsorship of the Junior High Cross Country Invitational Race.

Welcome back to the race world KRIS KRINGLE! This year’s 5 Mile race will be held at the Berks County Agricultural Center on Sunday, December 26th, at 10:00 a.m., and we can’t wait to see you there!

The race travels in a clockwise direction this year, as we reverse directions every year, giving runners a different perspective of the beautiful course. It is stroller- and walker-friendly. There are fast road sections, slow hill sections, gorgeous trail in the Blue Marsh Lake area, and a section of the Union Canal trail next to a beautiful trout stream. Unfortunately dogs are not allowed on the Union Canal trail, so pets have to wait with your friends at the finish.

Five year age group awards and High School Cross Country team awards. See the application.

Kris Kringle 2020 Final Report

At the February meeting we discussed and voted on splitting the profits from the race with three other organizations. We will donate $800.00 to each of the following organizations:

1. Berks County Cross Country Coaches Association

2. IM Able Foundation

3. Schuylkill River Greenways. Donation will go towards their fundraising effort to revive the Reading Gateway Section of The Schuylkill River Trail. A volunteer day for this project is March 27 and you must pre-register. For more information see the article in this newsletter “SRT: Reading Gateway Initiative.”

‘Twas Two Weeks before Race Day

by Polly Corvaia

‘Twas two weeks before race day,
And what do you know?
Outdoor events were all cancelled!
What a tough blow!

We scurried and scrambled,
WTF do we do now?
Keep the Kris Kringle running,
And go virtual somehow.

Away to the computer, we flew like a flash.
A membership Zoom meeting was held in a dash.
We changed the tradition, a virtual race did find.
Would anyone run it, would they be so inclined?

Run your fastest 5K, and send us your time.
We record the results and post them online.
We’ll send out the hoodies, and give out the swag.
We’re happy to report, a great response we did have.

Now runners! Now pacers! Now Gnomes and Volunteers!
Go faster! Go slower! Go have yourself some cheer!
To the top of the hill, and as far as you can run,
A pandemic won’t stop us; we’ve got to have fun.

The Virtual Kris Kringle was a surprising success
Thanks to the faithful runners; it is you who are blessed.
There are a few tiny details, we still need to sort.
Stay tuned until next month, for the final report.
