Berks County Needs Your Input for Its Active Transportation Plan

Berks County pedestrians and cyclists have a chance to be part of a Steering Committee that will update the County’s “Active Transportation Plan.”

Interested in representing the Pacers on this committee? Reach out to Newsletter Editor Matt Brophy for more information (Matthew.L.Brophy@gmail.com).

Below is an overview of the committee, and the important work it will be doing, from the Berks County Planning Commission:

Every person that lives, works, or visits Berks County depends on the transportation system to get around.  They travel not only by motor vehicle but also by walking, rolling, riding, or using public transportation. The Reading Area Transportation Study (RATS), the federally designated Metropolitan PIanning Organization (MPO) for Berks County, recognizes these various modes and has initiated work to update the 2020 Berks County Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation Plan with a completely new Active Transportation Plan.  This Plan will examine issues related to bicycle, pedestrian, and accessible transportation and how they integrate with safety, community health and movement.  It also serves as the non-motorized component of the county’s Long Range Transportation Plan.

As a vital part of the process, we are looking to establish a Steering Committee composed of community members who represent constituencies with interests in the issues to be covered by this Plan.  Based on your demonstrated commitment to local planning or your interest in bicycle, pedestrian, accessibility, and safety issues, you have been named as a possible candidate to serve on the Active Transportation Plan Steering Committee.  If a representative of your organization elects to participate in this process, we estimate that your commitments to this task would be limited to one meeting quarterly scheduled over a 15-month period that would culminate with Plan adoption in November 2027.

A kickoff meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, September 29, 2026, beginning at 1:30 p.m.  This meeting (and all subsequent meetings) will be held virtually via Microsoft Teams.  Please let us know if you or a representative are willing to participate in this effort no later than Monday, September 21, 2026.  During our initial meeting, we will determine a coordinated meeting schedule for the rest of the project duration.

Girls on the Run: Fall 2026 Season

Fall 2026 Is Here!

We’re also looking ahead to our Fall 5K Celebration! Join us on Saturday, November 7, at 8 a.m. at the Berks Heritage Center as we celebrate the accomplishments of our teams and participants. Registration opens September 1, and community members are invited to join the fun!

Ready to run with us? Register as a community runner at gotrberks.org/5k.

We’re also looking for volunteers to help make our 5K Celebration a joyful and memorable experience. Interested in lending a hand? Email 5kvolunteer@gotrberks.org to learn more.

We can’t wait to celebrate the season with our Girls on the Run community!

Wine & Cheese on 9/26/26

The Pagoda Pacer Wine and Cheese Party is back for 2026 at The Barn at Cacoosing (9 Evans Hill Rd, Sinking Spring)!

This fun event will be held on Saturday, September 26th, from 6 pm to 9 pm and is a great way to relax and mingle with fellow Pacers.

Your ticket includes wine, beer, soda, a large variety of cheeses, meats, fruits, desserts, and more.

The main event will be in the barn, but if it is nice weather, please feel free to bring a chair to sit outside and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

Tickets are $20 per Pacer Member and $25 for non-members through 9/12 and then $25 for members and $30 for non members through 9/26. Tickets must be bought in advance online; we will not be accepting cash at the door. Advance ticket purchase makes this much easier on the club volunteers and helps get an accurate head count for food and alcohol. Also, you must be 21 to attend and please leave the little ones at home to enjoy an evening out with your friends. We can’t wait to see you there!

Next Trail Maintenance Day on 9/20/26!

Those of us who love trail running, mountain biking, and hiking are so fortunate to live here in Berks County, where there are so many great trail networks to explore.

But maintaining our awesome trails requires a significant amount of work. Luckily, we know that many hands make light work. Join your fellow Pacers on upcoming trail maintenance days, led by our own Cody Harris and Michael Whalen.

  • No experience necessary—all ability levels can help!
  • No need to bring tools or special equipment!
  • Volunteering can count towards community service hours or Pacer Passport requirements!

The next chance to help out is on SUNDAY, September 20.

Meet at 9 a.m. at Plum Creek Farm Market & Creamery (in the lower, gravel parking lot near 183).

Questions? Reach out to Cody Harris (Codyalan.harris@gmail.com).

NOTE: Volunteers who want to help out with maintenance on Blue Marsh trails must sign a Blue Marsh volunteer form before participating.

Volunteer:
Volunteers are a vital part of every race our club presents. As this race is spread over
10 miles, with almost no overlap, we’re looking for about 30 people willing to help (road
marshals, aid stations, registration, setup, and cleanup). In the past, we’ve had race
participants volunteer for setup/registration and then go run the race or run the race and
then help clean up. If you’re not planning on running, there’s plenty of help needed as
either a visible road marshal or aid station volunteer. Every bit of help is greatly
appreciated by Danny & Jennifer. All of the volunteer spots are listed via the link below:

Wednesday Night Runs (September ’26 Locations)

Our mid-week group runs have at least two different distance options (3-4 miles and 5-6 miles) with an appointed leader for at least one of the two routes. Each run will have its own Facebook “event,” and the routes will be posted a couple days before the run. After each run, those who can will stick around for food, drink, and good conversation, either at a nearby restaurant or a club member’s residence. Come for the run; stay (if you can) for the fellowship. (If you don’t have time to stick around, no worries—just come run with us!)

All runs start at 6:15 p.m.

Blues Cruise Training Run on 9/12/26

We will meet at Old Church Road parking area https://maps.app.goo.gl/8UqPUZBzWR5Sxixj7 at 7:45 AM and carpool to the lower Stilling Basin lot to run point-to-point on the Blues Cruise course starting about 8 AM. The run is almost 16 miles. Runners can easily shorten it to just under 14 miles by skipping the Skinner’s Loop portion, and of course adding miles is easy too.

Please comment on the Facebook Event if you need suggestions. Bring water and nutrition! About 1,600 feet of climbing. Great day to dial in your race day gear! This includes some of the best parts of the BC course.

NOTE: This run is a group run open to ANYONE who is up for it. You don’t have to be registered for the Blues Cruise race (or a club member) to run with us—just show up!
