Letter from the President re: Fate of Gring’s Mill Race

At the upcoming October monthly meeting, I will make a motion to discontinue the club’s Gring’s Mill race. If you want to participate in the debate and vote, please attend on October 10.

The current race director is moving from the area. This prompted discussion at the last Board of Directors’ meeting, and a recommendation to bring the issue before the club for a vote. The size of the club has decreased over the last decade. This action is intended to reduce the commitments of the club and avoid overextending our race directors and volunteers.

Special Guest at September Membership Meeting

I don’t know about you, but I’m really looking forward to the September General Membership Meeting, which is coming up on Thursday, September 12th. Why? Two reasons:

Vice President Lisa Domeshek will be conducting the meeting! (Don’t worry–Steve is fine; he’ll just be vacationing in Scotland.)

And…we’ll be welcoming representatives from Berks Nature for a special, interactive presentation.

Berks Nature is a non-profit land conservation organization that is involved in land preservation, water protection, and trail maintenance. They are celebrating their 50th anniversary during 2024, and throughout the year they are hosting a series of public input forums to collect feedback on priorities of the Berks County community.

The Pagoda Pacers invited Berks Nature to our next meeting on Thursday, September 12. The opening 30 minutes of the meeting will be a forum for us to discuss the outdoor resources and natural spaces in Berks that are important to us. Consider attending to share your input.

As usual, please rsvp if you plan on attending the meeting. You can respond through the Facebook event or send an email to president@pagodapacers.com. It helps us plan for enough food.

That’s Thursday, September 12th at the Mohnton Fire Company Social Quarters. Food will be served at 6:30 p.m. — meeting starts at 7 p.m. All members are welcomed to attend.

Help Wanted: Club Secretary

Mihai Sanchez has been serving as Secretary for the Pagoda Pacers since the
beginning of 2024. Because of a change in his work hours, he can no
longer attend the monthly meeting on Thursdays, so he is stepping down
as Secretary. The club appreciates his efforts.

The Secretary is appointed by the President. They must be a member of
the club for at least one year and will be required to sign a
conflict-of-interest statement. The main responsibility is to capture
the official minutes from the monthly meeting. This is much easier
than it sounds – it’s just filling in a template. Of course, the
Secretary needs to be able to attend (almost) all of the monthly
meetings, which are the second Thursday of each month, January through
November, at 7pm.

If you think you could help the club in this capacity, please contact
Steve Vida (president@pagodapacers.com).  We’re trying to identify a
replacement in time for the May meeting.

I hope your Spring is starting better than the Phillies’ season. If not, there’s still time to turn it around for your goal races later in the year. We have longer days and better weather ahead of us.

There are several interesting topics for the April monthly meeting (scheduled for Thursday, 4/11, at 7pm — click HERE for details and to RSVP):

  • The Scholarship Committee will report on the 2024 scholarship awards.
  • The club will consider contributing toward the registration cost for the softball team.
  • We will hear a proposal for an 8-week series of group runs intended for beginner runners.

Come out to the meeting if you want to be part of the discussion, or send me an email if you have input but can’t attend.
