Final Shiver (and Awards Banquet!) on Sunday, 3/8/26!

Thank you to the 76 5k runners, 41 10k runners, and the many volunteers who braved the arctic cold in February to help us have another successful Shiver by the River on February 8th.  Admittedly, it was one of our smaller races, but given the brutal temperatures, we are thankful for each and every one of you who participated. To those who did race, you most likely got a low number of points to count towards the series awards!

Congratulations to the top M/F 5k runners, Charlies Fries  (18:16) and Lisa Zwierzyna (23:49); and the top 10k M/F runners, David Hitesman (39:22) and Stephanie Bender (46:39).  Thank you to runners and volunteers who continue to support us!!!!!!

Shiver#4 will be held March 8th. Take note – this is the beginning of Daylight Saving Time!!!

As always, we need more volunteers for this race. Specifically, we need 3 or 4 people willing to take results off of the board, so that the race directors can calculate results as soon as possible.  We also need the usual help with parking and registration, on the road, at the finish line, cleaning up, at the water stop, and within the house serving soup. Anyone helping with registration should plan to arrive at Jim Dietrich Park between 8:15 & 8:30; anyone helping during the race should plan to arrive by 9:30. To help us with volunteer assignments, we prefer that volunteers contact us prior to race day. If you have not already talked to one of us, please reach out to Georgine via Facebook or Instagram, or email her at gmmccool56@comcast.net.

However, for as much as we need volunteers, we would really like to see more PACERS run the race!!!!

The awards ceremony will be held immediately after the 4th race at the Temple Fire Company, 4963 Kutztown Rd, which is about 3 miles from Jim Dietrich Park. This is the same location as the last couple of years.

We are looking for more door prizes. If anyone can donate personally, or secure a door prize, please bring it to the 4th race. Donations can be given directly to any of the race directors or dropped off at the front table where we are selling old swag, etc. It would be appreciated if you could let us know in advance if you will be able to donate. To be eligible to win a door prize, simply complete the survey at the awards banquet.

A cold buffet, including a hot vegetarian item, will be served starting around 11:15, followed by door prizes and then the awards. Due to the costs associated with the party, we will follow the guidelines we established a few years ago.

The party is FREE to everyone who has either:

  1. Finished 3 or more races in this year’s series – please bring your race number from the 4th race to the party, it will be your ticket for free entry.  There will be a sticker on your bib, indicating your eligibility.
  2. Assisted with any of the races.
  3. Paid for the series.

We will be charging all others (including Pacers who do not fall into one of the above categories) a $15.00 fee to help cover some of our costs.

Remember, to help us maintain accurate results, DO NOT COMPLETE ANOTHER REGISTRATION FORM if you already ran this year. If you paid for the series, registration is in the front room of the house. If you are paying race-by-race, we have a number for you at the “Single Race Registration” table in the 2nd room. If you have not previously registered for the 2025-2026 series, registration is at a different table, also in the 2nd room.

Thanks for all the support we have received! We hope to see many of you at the Shiver, either running or volunteering!!!!!

Wednesday Night Runs (March ’26 Locations)

Our mid-week group runs have at least two different distance options (3-4 miles and 5-6 miles) with an appointed leader for at least one of the two routes. Each run will have its own Facebook “event,” and the routes will be posted a couple days before the run. After each run, those who can will stick around for food, drink, and good conversation, either at a nearby restaurant or a club member’s residence. Come for the run; stay (if you can) for the fellowship. (If you don’t have time to stick around, no worries–just come run with us!)

All runs start at 6:15 p.m.

This is the end of the March ’26 Newsletter. Continue scrolling if you would like to view older content.

RACE REPORT: THE KEY WEST RUNFEST 5k, 10k, 8k, and Half Marathon (or, How I Earned the Distinction “Big Pecker,” and Why I’m OK with It)

by Tom Chobot

The Key West Run Fest took place on January 17 and 18, with the 5k and 10k taking place one hour apart on Saturday, and the 8k and half marathon on Sunday. In addition to the 4 races, the directors offer the “Big Pecker” and “Little Pecker” challenges. The BPC is doing the 5k, 10k, and half, while the LPC is the 5k, 10k, and 8k. They also offer a “Rum Stroll” and “Beach-n-Beer Mile” on Sunday afternoon, but we won’t talk about that. Suffice it to say that what happens in Key West stays in Key West.

“Oh hell, let’s go for the BPC. What could go wrong?” Even being fat, old, and out of shape (I’m speaking purely for myself here), the cut-off times seemed to be well within our ability level.

Unbeknownst to us, until a few days earlier, Mike Whalen had also signed up, and the 3 of us had a great weekend running the races and checking out the city.

The 5k started at 7a.m. and our strategy was to hold back and save enough for the next 2 races. Yeah right, like that’s going to happen. How many runners do you know who plan to “run easy” and actually follow through with it once the gun goes off? Anyway, after about a 30-minute break, and just as the rigor mortis was starting to settle in, off we went in the 10k, wondering whose brilliant idea was this? We all managed to easily make the cut-offs and spent the rest of the day hobbling around town and doing what people do here – see the sites and get our blood-alcohol back up to a respectable level. Well, I did anyway. Probably not the smartest way to rehydrate, but at my age, fun takes precedence over common sense.

The start of the half the next morning was festive as you would expect, but not without a few glitches. For one, 5 out of the 10 porta-johns ran out of toilet paper 30 minutes before race time, and at least one aid station ran out of water. More than a few unhappy runners. Fortunately, the weather was unseasonably cool, but still on the warm side for racing with plenty of runners struggling with the heat in the latter part of the race. However, considering it was 400 degrees below zero with 87 feet of snow on the ground back home, we weren’t going to complain one bit.

They gave us a finisher medal for each race plus one for the challenge and encouraged us to wear them around town. The only problem was that we looked more like Mr. T than runners with all the hardware around our necks. I might add that the Big Pecker medal makes the sound of a rooster when you push a button. Gotta love Key West. Still, it was a fun weekend and a gratifying accomplishment, as well as spending time with a fellow Pacer in a faraway place. Generally, it was a well-run event with a few hiccups that will undoubtedly be addressed. Nice course, lots of amenities, and enthusiastic spectators and staff. Bottom line, will we go back? Probably.

Warmer Conditions Promised for Charlie Horse & Dirty Pony

We might be buried under ~12 inches of snow, but believe it or not, your favorite Pagoda Pacer half-marathon is right around the corner. That’s right, Charlie Horse (& Dirty Pony 5k) is just under 4 months away. If you’re looking for some motivation during this seemingly unending cold snap, sign up today and be ready when warmer weather finally returns. In case you need more incentive, proceeds are donated to an incredibly worthy cause—Special Olympics Pennsylvania, Team Berks. What is better than trail running AND supporting other athletes in our community?!

Early bird pricing ended 1/31, but even if you missed that deadline, it’s still a great deal (only $55!! for Charlie Horse, with pizza and adult beverages included at the finish line for those that wish to partake!)

Charlie Horse Trail Half-Marathon & Dirty Pony 5K – May 24, 2026

If you’re like me and appreciate a bargain, check out the Triple Trail Challenge. ICYMI, Triple Trail Challenge gives a little extra swag, recognition, and bragging rights (at no extra cost!) to those brave enough to sign up and finish all three of the Pagoda Pacer trail races (Charlie Horse Half, Run for the Ages 10k, & Blues Cruise 50k). If you love trail running but aren’t quite up for the distance, Triple Trail Starter Pack is an option, too. Look for Triple Trail Challenge registration on Ultrasignup to receive a price break on all three races.

Fleet Feet’s “Teddy Bear Trot” less than a week away!

Join Fleet Feet West Reading for the 8th annual Teddy Bear Trot!

The Teddy Bear Trot is the perfect blend of running and giving back to our community. All participants are asked to bring a brand NEW Teddy Bear to the event.

New this year: At Eight-Twenty at the Mills, we will have a teddy bear tag-making station for you to write something special to the kids who will receive your bear. We will also have a photo shoot area to take some pictures with your donations.

Participants then join us as we run the bears to the Opportunity House in Reading, for them to use in their Learning Center. This year we will be welcomed into the Opportunity House Early Learning Center to say “Hello” to some of the kids who attend the Center. The kids who come to welcome us will not only be benefitting from our donations, but will get to take a bear home after the event. After making our donations, we will continue en route to finish our 3-mile fun run. This is not a race, but rather a social group run to give back to our community. Once back at Eight-Twenty at the Mills, we will have a Deluxe Hot Cocoa station for you to get warmed up after your run.

The proceeds for this event will be donated to Opportunity House as they continue to serve our homeless community. Additional monetary donations will be accepted at the event and will be given to Opportunity House to support their endeavors. We will also be collecting non-perishable foods and blankets at the start of the run at Sly Fox to donate as well.

Everyone will have a chance to wear/test Karhu shoes, an exclusive Fleet Feet product. Karhu is Finnish for the word “Bear,” making their brand a perfect partner for this event!

Runners will be sent to Opportunity House to make our donations in 3 groups.  Groups will depart at 10:00, 10:10 and 10:15 to donate the teddy bears. Please take a look at the pace ranges for each group and sign up for the time that best suits your abilities. Our goal is to get to the Opportunity House at the same time to give them the bears and for a group photo. We will then continue on our 4-mile loop. There will be group leaders to help direct the runners/walkers.

10:00am – Walkers and 13+ minute milers

10:10am – 10-12 minute milers

10:15am – 8-10 minute milers
