Kris Kringle 2020 Final Report

At the February meeting we discussed and voted on splitting the profits from the race with three other organizations. We will donate $800.00 to each of the following organizations:

1. Berks County Cross Country Coaches Association

2. IM Able Foundation

3. Schuylkill River Greenways. Donation will go towards their fundraising effort to revive the Reading Gateway Section of The Schuylkill River Trail. A volunteer day for this project is March 27 and you must pre-register. For more information see the article in this newsletter “SRT: Reading Gateway Initiative.”

Shiver by the River: February, 2021

We are planning to have a REAL, LIVE race on Feb 14th!!!!!!  That will be followed by 2 more races on March 14 and April 11!!!! Yes, something new – a Shiver race in April! Thank you to all the runners for their patience and flexibility as race plans were constantly changing.  Registration for all of the Shiver races is online only, via Pretzel City Sports. We continue to limit our races to 200 runners.

The January race was virtual and many runners chose to run the actual course after picking up their swag at the Jim Dietrich pavilion. Virtual race results are posted on our website.

When we cancelled the December race, we sent an email to all runners, asking them to let us know how to handle their registration (switching to another Shiver race or a refund). In January, another email was sent to all outstanding December runners, notifying them of a deadline of January 31st, after which we will not refund race fees from December.

Once again, we will be looking towards club members to volunteer. We don’t need as many volunteers prior to race, since there is no race day registration; and we don’t need anyone after the race, as there is no food. However, we do need volunteers to park cars; direct runners at the various intersections; help in the chute; man the water stop in the park; and to furnish water and Gatorade after the race. The water/Gatorade table at the end will have 1 or 2 volunteers, wearing gloves, filling the cups and placing them on the table for the runners to take.  This will prevent dozens of runners, from touching the containers. To help in planning, it is appreciated if you can let us know in advance of your availability by directly contacting Sue, Georgine, or Tiffany, or by emailing shiverdirector@pagodapacers.com. However, if you can’t commit until race day, that is fine; just find one of the race directors at the swag pickup area.  For those on the road, we can give you an intersection, so it is your choice if you want to come to the park or go directly to your intersection. Swag pickup opens at 8:30, so we ask that those parking cars or helping with swag pickup arrive around 8:00-8:15. The race starts at 10:00, so we ask those helping during the race to arrive around 9:30, or if going directly to your intersection, please be there by 10:00.  Swag pickup will be at the pavilion, near the farmhouse, weather permitting; otherwise, it will be in the farmhouse.  We ask everyone to wear a mask. Gloves will be provided.

Thank you to everyone for your continued support of the Shiver, whether as a runner, volunteer, or both.  We appreciate everyone’s patience as we work through the ever-changing restrictions and regulations!!  Feel free to contact us with any questions or comments.

Stay safe everyone!!!!

Sue, Georgine, and Tiffany

Shiver by the River: Pandemic Update

Like everything else in 2020, the Shiver has been a crazy endeavor. On the Thursday prior to the December Shiver, Governor Wolf imposed more restrictions, including a limit of 50 people at an outdoor gathering. We had no choice but to scramble and cancel the race and then come up with a plan. We emailed all December race participants and offered them options of switching to a different Shiver race, getting a refund, or moving to a new Shiver race on the 2nd Sunday in April.

Then as numbers in PA continued to rise, with a predicted spike after Christmas, the Race Directors decided they had very little confidence that restrictions will be eliminated on Jan 4th, as was announced. Therefore, the RDs decided to make January a virtual race. Again, we sent an email to all January runners, notifying them of the virtual race and giving them the option of doing a virtual race or moving their registration to either Feb, Mar, or April (or requesting a refund). We also notified all December runners that the January race will be virtual, as that might affect their decision of what to do with their December registration. We offered the virtual runners the opportunity to pick up their swag on the original date and location of the race, hoping that would be convenient.

If any of you registered for December and haven’t done so already, let us know what you want us to do with your registration. We are not automatically moving it to April or doing any of the other options. If we don’t hear from the January runners, we are assuming they are doing the virtual race. We are hopeful the February and March Shivers will occur as planned.

Online registration for the new April Shiver will be opening soon. We wanted to give the December and  January runners the first opportunity to register for the April race, but soon it will be available to everyone. We will continue to  use only online registration, because that allows us to control the numbers.

Thank you to everyone for your continued support of the Shiver, whether as a runner, or volunteer, or both.  We appreciate everyone’s patience as we work through the ever-changing restrictions and regulations!!  Feel free to contact us (shiverdirector@pagodapacers.com) with any questions or comments.

Stay safe everyone!!!!

‘Twas Two Weeks before Race Day

by Polly Corvaia

‘Twas two weeks before race day,
And what do you know?
Outdoor events were all cancelled!
What a tough blow!

We scurried and scrambled,
WTF do we do now?
Keep the Kris Kringle running,
And go virtual somehow.

Away to the computer, we flew like a flash.
A membership Zoom meeting was held in a dash.
We changed the tradition, a virtual race did find.
Would anyone run it, would they be so inclined?

Run your fastest 5K, and send us your time.
We record the results and post them online.
We’ll send out the hoodies, and give out the swag.
We’re happy to report, a great response we did have.

Now runners! Now pacers! Now Gnomes and Volunteers!
Go faster! Go slower! Go have yourself some cheer!
To the top of the hill, and as far as you can run,
A pandemic won’t stop us; we’ve got to have fun.

The Virtual Kris Kringle was a surprising success
Thanks to the faithful runners; it is you who are blessed.
There are a few tiny details, we still need to sort.
Stay tuned until next month, for the final report.

31st Annual Shiver: First Race Coming Up!

The 31st annual SHIVER by the RIVER 5K & 10K is NOW.  The first one is Dec 13th, at Jim Dietrich Park, in Muhlenberg Twp.  There is no race day registration and online registration closes at mid-night on Dec 9th or when we reach 200 runners.  We still need volunteers.

We need help parking cars, in the finish area, on the road, at the water stop and also at a water table in the parking lot.  To help in planning, it is appreciated if you can let us know in advance, of your availability, by directly contacting either Sue, Georgine or Tiffany or by emailing shiverdirector@pagodapacers.com.  However, if you can’t commit until race day, that is fine, just find one of the race directors at registration.   For those on the road, we can give you an intersection, so it is your choice if you want to come to the park or go directly to your intersection.

Registration opens at 8:30, so we ask that those parking cars or helping with registration, arrive around 8:00-8:15.  The race starts at 10:00, so we ask those helping during the race to arrive around 9:30, or if going directly to your intersection, please be there by 10:00.

For details, especially changes we have made to assure everyone’s safety, please see our app on the Pacer website.

Thanks in advance for your support!

The 2020 Kris Kringle 5k Is SOLD OUT.

We reached our limit in two weeks and have started a waiting list.

If you want to join the waiting list or volunteer on race day let us know by emailing kriskringledirector@pagodapacers.com.

Since it is a new XC style course we will need volunteers at every turn so runners can run through without hesitation.

The race will be on Sunday, December 27, 10am at the Berks County Fairgrounds (next to Berks Ag Center where the race normally is).  Bib pick-up starts at 8:30.

First Shiver Six Weeks Away!

Shiver by the River

The 31st annual SHIVER by the RIVER 5K & 10K is quickly approaching.  The first one is Dec 13th, at Jim Dietrich Park, in Muhlenberg Twp.  Bib pickup begins at 8:30, 5K start at 10:00; 10K starts at 10:10.  Due to Covid there is no race day sign-up; all runners must pre-register.

Volunteers – We are asking that you let us know in advance if you can help.  For those on the road, we can give you an intersection and you don’t even have to come into the park.  Also, we need fewer for registration, so this will assure that we don’t have extra volunteers.  Feel free to contact any of the race directors directly, or email shiverdirector@pagodapacers.com.

Thank you in advance for your support!

Registration for Shiver ’20 – ’21 Is Open!

We have finalized plans for the Shiver – as final as anything can be in 2020!!!!!   Please see the new application, posted on the Pacer website, for details.  We realize not everyone will be happy with our decisions but our focus is on holding a safe race that complies with current restrictions.  Some of this information is the same as last month, some of it is new.

  • No series, only 4 individual races.  Because we don’t know how Covid may change everything over a period of 4 months, it will be easier to have 4 separate events, not tied together.  As before, the races will be held on the 2nd Sunday:  12/13/20, 1/10/21, 2/14/21, 3/14/21.
  • Limit of 200 runners each month, combined total of the 5K and 10K.
  • On-line preregistration only.  No mail-in or day of registrations.
  • Awards only for the 1st M/F in the 5K and 10K each month.  Everyone will receive a finisher award each month.
  • We are not doing age group awards because we chose to give everyone something to take home during this crazy race time. Also, giving awards encourages runners to remain at the race longer and also results in more interaction as awards are distributed.  We are trying to make this work for everyone.  Some runners may choose to hang out in the park with their fellow runners but others may wish to run and leave and not worry about waiting for awards.
  • Covid designed shirt – The shirt must be pre-ordered.
  • On race day, runners will receive a bag containing their bib, safety pins, finisher award, a variety of individually wrapped snacks and a shirt (if pre-ordered).
  • To create further separation, 10K will start 10 minutes after the 5K.  Therefore, runners must register for the distance they want to run each month.  Runners can change the distance from month to month.
  • We ask runners to wear a mask as they approach registration.  Masks are NOT required during the race.

If you run the Shiver each year or have never run a Shiver please consider joining us this season!! Feel free to contact any of the race directors with questions or comments.

Thanks!
